0 Okay, I have to tell someone because I cannot hold this in. My married neighbor from two doors down matched me on a random cam site.
Her name’s Carol, we wave at each other when we take out recycling, that’s the whole relationship. I did not recognize her at first because she had her hair down and no glasses. Then she squinted at the screen and said “wait. 4B? Is that you?” and I felt my soul leave my body.
“Hi, Carol,” I said, like a normal person. She stared at me. I stared at her. The silence was so loud I could hear my own heartbeat.
Then she burst out laughing and said “I needed this today more than you know, but I am NOT doing this with my neighbor. Say nothing, I’ll pretend this never happened, and I’m sorry you had to see my awkward side.” She unmatched before I could even reply.
We have not spoken since. She still waves, but now there’s a tiny, knowing smile attached to it. Neither of us will ever bring it up, and honestly that’s the best ending I could have asked for.
It taught me that you never know who’s on the other end, and the realest moments on random chat are the ones that leave you staring at your screen going “what just happened.” I’ll be thinking about this one for a while.
